Explanation
The pharynx is the open area at the back of the throat above the openings of the trachea and esophagus. The pharynx consists of three continuous areas:
- Nasopharynx – the upper portion, above the soft palate, the back of the nasal cavity
- Laryngopharynx – the lower portion, above the esophagus
- Oropharynx – the area of the pharynx at the back of the throat, in front of the soft palate
